An interactive document is any file that students read, annotate and answer questions inside, with everyone's comments visible to the group. That covers a great deal of ground, which is why the general description is less useful than seeing what different disciplines actually build with it.
These eight patterns come up again and again across subjects. Each one includes the reasoning behind the design, so you can adapt it to your own material rather than reproduce an example from a field that is not yours.

Where it works: any discipline that assigns primary literature.
Take a journal article and place questions at the four structural points: the claim in the introduction, the method, the key result, and the limitations. Ask students to state in their own words what the authors did, and then whether the result supports the claim as strongly as the abstract suggests.
The reason this works is that it teaches the reading strategy that experienced academics use automatically and never explain. Students learn that a paper is read in a particular order with particular questions in mind, and after four or five of these they start doing it without the prompts.
Where it works: law, public administration, ethics, political science.
Give students the judgement or the policy text and ask them to mark where the reasoning turns, where an assumption is being made without argument, and where they would have decided differently. Because annotations are shared, the class arrives having already located the contested passages.
The seminar then starts from the disagreement rather than from a summary, which is the whole point of a case based discipline and is usually lost when half the class has not read the text.
Where it works: mathematics, engineering, statistics, accounting, chemistry.
Rather than giving students a complete worked solution, place questions at each step asking what happens next and why before revealing it. Students commit to an answer and then see the correct move.
This addresses a specific and well known problem, which is that students read worked examples and feel they understand, then cannot reproduce the reasoning. Interrupting the example forces the retrieval that passive reading skips, and it also reveals which step is the one people actually stumble on.
Where it works: computer science, data science, any course where students write code.
Upload a piece of code with deliberate inefficiencies or bugs and ask students to annotate lines they would change and why. Because comments are visible, students see the range of things their classmates noticed, which is closer to how code review actually works in a team.
A variation that works well for later year students is to upload a piece of code with no bugs at all and see whether the cohort can tell. Learning to say "this looks correct" with justification is a genuinely hard skill.
Where it works: art history, architecture, geography, biology, medicine, music, design.
Interactive documents are not only for text. Upload a plan, a scan, a slide, a map or a piece of notation and ask students to annotate specific regions. What makes this powerful is that the annotation is anchored to a location, so a student's observation is attached to the exact part of the image they are talking about.
For visual disciplines this replaces a conversation that is otherwise almost impossible to have asynchronously, because "the area near the top left" never quite works in a discussion forum.
Where it works: medicine, nursing, social work, teacher education, business.
Release a case in stages inside one document. Students annotate the initial presentation with what they notice and what they would do, then read on and find out what happened, then annotate again.
The sequencing is what matters. Once students see the outcome, their reasoning about the earlier stage is contaminated, so capturing the initial judgement before revealing the result is the only way to see how they actually think. This is also how clinical reasoning is taught in person, and it survives the move to an asynchronous format better than most things do.
Where it works: philosophy, literature, theology, critical theory, translation.
Take two or three pages of a genuinely hard text and ask everyone to annotate line by line, including marking confusion. Do not add many instructor questions; the annotations are the activity.
What emerges is a collective reading. Students who understood one clause explain it to those who did not, and the instructor can see precisely which sentence broke the class. In disciplines where the skill being taught is close reading itself, this is closer to the real work than any comprehension question would be.
Where it works: writing intensive courses, dissertation preparation, any course with a major written output.
Students upload a draft and classmates annotate it in place, with comments anchored to the sentences they refer to. This is more useful than a summary review at the bottom of a document, because "I lost the argument here" attached to the specific sentence is actionable in a way that general feedback is not.
It also gives students the experience of seeing several drafts at the same stage as their own, which is the calibration most students never get.
Look across the list and the same mechanism is doing the work each time. In every example, the student has to commit to something visible at a specific point in the document, and someone else can see what they committed to. That is the entire difference between a reading assignment and an interactive document, and it explains why the effect does not depend on the subject.
It also explains the most common failure. If the questions ask students to locate information rather than to form a judgement, the commitment is trivial and nothing much happens. The examples above all ask for a position, a prediction, a decision or an observation, which is why they generate discussion rather than compliance.
Keep the document short. Length is the single biggest predictor of whether students finish. Eight to twelve pages is a reasonable ceiling for a weekly activity, and cutting a long text to its essential section teaches something in itself.
Decide whether annotations are visible from the start. Immediate visibility produces conversation, but it also produces anchoring, where later students echo the first few comments. If you want independent judgement, hide responses until a student submits their own. If you want discussion, show them.
