Most institutions now hold a large archive of recorded lectures that were made quickly, are watched at double speed if they are watched at all, and are hard to connect to anything students actually learned. Interactive video is the most direct response to that, and it is also easy to implement in a way students find tedious.
This guide covers what the interactions do to the act of watching, where to place them in a recording, and the specific choices that separate a video students engage with from one they click through.

An interactive video is a normal video or audio recording with activities placed at points along its timeline. A question appears at eight minutes and the student answers before continuing. A discussion prompt appears at fourteen minutes and the student writes a response that classmates can see and reply to. The instructor can see who watched, who answered, and what they said.
That description makes it sound like a quiz attached to a video, which is the version that fails. The point is not the questions. The point is what the questions do to the act of watching.
Watching a lecture is a passive activity that feels like learning. Students report high confidence after watching and perform poorly when tested, because recognising an explanation as it goes past is much easier than retrieving it later. This is one of the best documented illusions in learning research.
Interrupting the video with a question breaks that illusion in a way the student experiences directly. They have to retrieve something, they discover whether they can, and the attempt itself strengthens the memory more than rewatching would have. Retrieval practice and spacing are two of the most reliable findings in the whole field, and interactive video is simply a way of building both into a format students were already using.
There is a second, more mundane effect. A video that requires a response cannot be played at triple speed in the background while doing something else. That alone changes the quality of the twenty minutes.
Placement matters more than question quality, and most people get it wrong in the same way.
Do not put everything at the end. Questions at the end of a twenty minute video test whether the student can remember the last three minutes. Questions distributed through the recording test whether they followed each part, and they give the student a reason to attend throughout.
Place a question just after each conceptual chunk, not at fixed time intervals. Watch your own recording and note the moments where you finish explaining one idea and start the next. Those transitions are the natural interaction points, and they are usually every four to seven minutes in a lecture recording.
Put one interaction very early. A question at ninety seconds establishes that this video expects something from the viewer. Students who learn that in the first two minutes watch the rest differently.
Use the hardest question after the most difficult explanation, not before it. The instinct is to protect students from a hard question. The opposite is correct. The point where students most need to find out whether they understood is immediately after the part they are most likely to have missed.
If every interaction is a multiple choice question with one right answer, students will learn to guess and move on. A mix keeps attention and produces far more useful information.
A multiple choice question is right when there is a common misconception you want to surface, and the wrong options should be the misconceptions rather than obvious nonsense. An open question is right when you want to see reasoning, and it is worth the reading time for a small number of high value moments. A prediction prompt placed before you reveal a result, asking what students think will happen, produces noticeably better recall of the answer. A discussion prompt where students see each other's responses turns an individual activity into something closer to a seminar, and it is the interaction type most often underused.
A confidence check, asking students how sure they are, is worth adding once per video. The gap between confidence and correctness is the most useful diagnostic you will get, and it is the thing students most need to see about themselves.

The editing still matters. Automatically generated questions tend to be accurate and shallow, because they are drawn from what was said rather than from what students find hard. Expect to keep roughly half, rewrite the distractors on the multiple choice items so they reflect real misconceptions, and add one or two questions of your own at the places where you know from experience that students get lost. The interactions turn every video into an instrument. Three things are worth looking at before the next class.
Where students stopped watching. A sharp drop at eleven minutes usually means the explanation at eleven minutes is not working. This is the single most useful signal in the data and it is invisible in a normal recording.
Which question was answered worst. That is your next class's starting point, and it is often not the topic you expected.
Which students did not engage at all. In a large online cohort this is your earliest available warning that someone is disengaging, weeks before an assessment would have told you.
Exporting this and spending ten minutes with it turns interactive video from a student activity into a feedback loop for your own teaching.
Too many questions. More than one interaction every four or five minutes makes the video feel like an obstacle course and students start optimising for getting through it. Fewer, better placed questions produce more engagement, not less.
Grading everything on correctness. If every question counts towards a mark, students stop using the questions to find out what they do not know, which is the entire point. Grade for participation and completion in formative videos, and keep correctness grading for the small number of videos where it genuinely is an assessment.
Using it for content that did not need video in the first place. A twelve minute recording of someone reading definitions aloud does not become good teaching when you add questions to it. Interactive video is most valuable for content where seeing something happen matters, such as a worked procedure, a demonstration, a case discussion or a piece of analysis performed in real time.
Uploading a ninety minute lecture capture. Cut it into segments of ten to twenty minutes each. Students complete short videos and abandon long ones, and short segments also let you reuse individual pieces in later courses.
Take one recording that you know students struggle with, cut it to under twenty minutes, and add four interactions: one in the first two minutes, two at conceptual transitions, and one confidence check near the end. Set it as preparation for a class, and open that class by showing the cohort how they answered.
That last step is what makes the activity land. When students see that their responses changed what the session is about, interactive video stops being homework with extra steps and becomes part of how the course actually works.
