What is transformative learning?

Transformative learning is an educational theory rooted in human development, aiming to cultivate conscious learners who, through critical (self-)reflection, can challenge their cognitive biases, habitual patterns, and even their worldview or perspective. As a multi-phase process (comprising up to ten stages according to researcher Jack Mezirow), transformative learning guides individuals through both personal and collective experiences, ultimately fostering a more empathetic, adaptive, and positively engaged approach to learning and life.

Why transformative learning?

Research highlights the importance of fostering intellectual openness in educational settings to facilitate transformative learning experiences, which lead to profound personal change, fundamentally altering students' perceptions and frames of reference. As a highly ambitious, human-centered framework, transformative learning unfolds as a long-term process, cultivating essential soft skills such as critical thinking, self-awareness, empathy, and adaptability. By fostering these competencies in layered, iterative ways, it prepares students to navigate an increasingly complex, nuanced, and ever-evolving world. Moreover, it deepens their engagement with pressing global challenges (including diversity and inclusion, sustainability, geopolitical dynamics, and rapid socio-digital transformations), ultimately equipping them to take meaningful action.

Foster critical development

Reflection is the strongest driver of transformative learning, enabling students to critically examine their assumptions and experience deep personal growth.

Develop intercultural competence

Engaging in cross-cultural learning experiences fosters critical self-reflection, enhances cultural awareness, and strengthens students' ability to navigate diverse research and professional environments.

How does FeedbackFruits support transformative learning?

FeedbackFruits can help you integrate a transformative learning framework into your courses with learning activities specifically designed to foster student self-examination, critical thinking, feedback literacy, and thoughtful discussion with peers.

As transformative learning is a multi-phase process (comprising three key stages according to Nerstrom—reflection, transformation, action—and up to ten according to Mezirow's foundational theory), you can create learning designs, which consist of multiple FeedbackFruits learning activities structured into sequential learning stages, are particularly well-suited models; especially when they incorporate peer reviews, self-assessments, synchronous or asynchronous discussions, and feedback options, including feedback on feedback.
